FRAUD PREVENTION

We're committed to keeping your account information safe and secure.

Here's what you need to know.

During a transition, account fraud can become more prevalent. Working together is the best way to keep your personal information safe during and after your move to Schwab.

So, stay aware and follow a few simple tips—and let's stop potential fraud in its tracks.

How to tell if a message is really from us.

You may hear from Schwab and TD Ameritrade for reasons related to your account move. But we will never ask you to reply with account numbers or personal details. We already have that information.

If you suspect fraud of any kind, or even if something just doesn't feel right, call us at 800-780-8614.

Common deceptive practices you might encounter.

If you get a message of any kind that makes you feel uncertain, don't hesitate to reach out and call us.

Common deceptive practices

  • Urgent messages

Messages may sound urgent and use your personal details to appear legitimate. Scammers may even include Charles Schwab or TD Ameritrade as the sender.

  • Suspicious emails

Poorly worded emails with typos or deceptive-looking addresses might be a scam. Never open links or attachments you don't recognize.

  • Unknown texts

Texts from senders outside of your saved contacts may be a fraud attempt. Even texts that appear to be from us might be a spoofed account. Never respond to texts with your personal or financial information.

  • Mobile and social scams

Strange links or requests for money from a mobile app or social media are sure signs of a scam—even from what may appear as a trusted person in a chat window. If you don't recognize it, reject it.

  • Phone scams

Scammers can make any name or number show up on your caller ID. They can even spoof Schwab's name and phone number. So, if you don't recognize the number, don't pick up.

  • Money transfer requests

Imposters may ask you to transfer money from or through your account to a non-TD Ameritrade or non-Schwab account. If you notice any unusual account activity or requests, please give us a call.

Schwab's advanced authentication and security alerts

  • Advanced authentication

When you create your new Schwab Login ID and password, you'll have the option to enroll in two-step verification.

Your part: For stronger account protection, you can choose to verify your identity with a one-time security code every time you log in, or only when you log in on a device Schwab doesn't recognize.

  • Security alerts

Once your account has moved to Schwab, log in and set up security alerts. This will allow you to receive notifications, so you'll know immediately when activity occurs in your accounts.

Your part: As soon as you're alerted to suspicious activity, report it right away so we can take action to protect your assets.*
