While your overall thinkorswim trading experience will remain largely unchanged when your account moves to Schwab, there are a few differences. Here's what you need to know.

  • What's staying the same (just about everything)

    • For most thinkorswim users, settings, watchlists preferences, and alerts will remain intact.
    • Same desktop and mobile versions (no need for new downloads).
    • Same URL to access thinkorswim web.
    • Same trading experience and support—in fact, the entire thinkorswim product team is moving to Schwab with you.
    • All your current trading permissions are moving with you to Schwab, including your margin and portfolio margin features, your options approval level, and your ability to trade futures and forex.
  • What's changing

    • After your account moves to Schwab, you'll need to use your new Schwab login info to access thinkorswim.
    • When you log in to each thinkorswim platform for the first time after your move, your connection will need to be switched to Schwab. Please see the "Using thinkorswim after your move to Schwab" section below for more details.
    • In some cases, your professional/nonprofessional designation status might not move with you. Should this occur, you would have delayed quotes on thinkorswim when you first move to Schwab. To enable real-time quotes, you'll need to sign your agreements by logging in to Schwab.com or Schwab Mobile. For most clients, you'll then be able to view your real-time quotes once you log out and then log back in to thinkorswim.

Using thinkorswim after your move to Schwab

When you log in to each thinkorswim platform for the first time after your move, your connection will need to be switched to Schwab. Here's how:

  • thinkorswim desktop and thinkorswim mobile

If you attempt to log in using your TD Ameritrade login information:

    • When you log in using your TD Ameritrade user ID and password, a prompt will appear directing you to the new Schwab login experience.
    • Follow the prompt, enter your Schwab Login ID and password, and agree to the Terms and Conditions. Then you're all set.

If you attempt to log in using your new Schwab login info:

    • When you log in using your new Schwab Login ID and password, an error message will appear
    • From that message, click the 'Schwab Login' option which will direct you to the new Schwab login experience.
    • Follow the prompt, enter your Schwab Login ID and password, agree to the Terms and Conditions. Then, you're all set.

    Note for mobile users Tooltip

  • thinkorswim web

There's nothing you'll need to do. Simply go to the URL you're using now and you will see a button to 'Login with Schwab'. If you don't see it, here's a direct link to login to thinkorswim online with your Schwab ID.

Not sure if you're connected to Schwab or TD Ameritrade?

If you log in to any of the thinkorswim platforms and you're not sure if it's connected to TD Ameritrade or Schwab, just look at the thinkorswim logo. If it's blue, you're on Schwab. If it's green you're on TD Ameritrade. Good thing thinkorswim looks great in both.

Using external trading API applications at Schwab.

If you currently use a third-party trading API application at TD Ameritrade that's linked to your account, there are a few things you should know about how this will work when your account moves to Schwab.

  • Actual availability for your new Schwab account on an external application will depend on if and when the external app developer integrates with the new Schwab Trader API.
  • While some external applications may have completed the integration work by the time of your account move, it is possible that others may have not.
    • All commercial applications must go through a review process, and the development and integration of the external application will be the responsibility of the external application once the review process is complete.
    • Please note that Schwab does not guarantee that any given commercial application will be available. If you have any additional questions, reach out to the company that created the application that you wish to use with a Schwab account.
  • You won't be able to access your Schwab account on the external application until the app has been integrated into the Schwab Trader API.
  • You'll always be able to access and trade in your Schwab brokerage accounts through Schwab platforms such as thinkorswim (desktop, web, and mobile), Schwab.com, and the Schwab Mobile app.
